A road trip through Iceland

With Iceland Nomads, you will discover all the island's highlights and hidden spots in 7 days. You will follow the Icelandic Ring Road towards the famous south coast, the mysterious north and the rugged inland. Along the way, you will spend the night in a rooftop tent at unique camping spots and you will end your road trip in the charming capital Reykjavík.

What’s included?

The basic price for this trip is €750 (excluding flights) per person, based on two people per vehicle.

The basic price includes the following:

  • A 4X4 equipped with a roof tent.
  • 7 nights at unique campsites.
  • A detailed roadbook with the full itinerary and lots of tips and advice for the trip.
  • Access to an exclusive app with useful information and an interactive map.
  • Sleeping equipment: a double mattress, sleeping bags and pillows.
  • Camping equipment: a camping table and stools.
  • Cooking equipment: a saucepan, frying pan, stove, plates and cups.
  • Support in advance and in case of on-site issues.

You can add the following options to your trip:

  • We offer flights from Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris & Berlin. Please send us an email if you want to book them with us.
  • Checked baggage (20 kg): €55 per piece

Drink and eat

During your road trip, you have 3 culinary options:

1. Cooking in your car
Your car comes with cooking equipment, which will enable you to cook during the week. If you feel like experimenting with the local ingredients, you can go grocery shopping at several places along the way. The supermarkets we recommend can be found in the app.

2. Order a Food Pack
If you really want to make things easy for yourself, you can order a food pack in advance. It contains meals for your entire trip (3 meals per day per person), a combination of packaged food that only requires some water and canned ingredients.

3. Experience local cuisine
Would you like to experience the local cuisine? In the roadbook, you will find all kinds of nice restaurants where you can taste authentic food.

Where are you expected and how do you get there?

Your trip starts in Reykjavík.

We expect you at our basecamp on the first day to pick up your car between 2pm and 6pm.

There are various options to get on site. You can, for instance, choose to use our optional shuttle service.

Flights

We only offer flights from Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris, and Berlin to Reykjavík, so we recommend comparing the different flight options from your preferred airport via Google Flights.

Make sure you arrive at Keflavík Airport (KEF) and take the itinerary into account when booking your flights.

How do I get to the base camp?

Our base camp is situated in Hafnarfjörður, about a 30-minute drive from the airport.

There are 3 different ways to get there:

Iceland Nomads shuttle

  • €35 per person per journey
  • Outbound journey day 1: departure from the airport at 4:20 PM.
  • Return journey day 8: departure from the base camp at 4:30 AM

Taxi

  • ± €120 per trip

Bus

  • The bus stop is a little further down the road from the base camp. So be prepared for a short walk if you decide to take the bus.

Where and when can you pick up the car?

On day 1, you can pick up the car directly from our rangers at the base camp between 2pm and 6pm.

On day 8, you need to return the car to the same location by 10am at the latest.

What documents do I need to travel to Iceland?
  • An identity card (for EU residents) or an international passport valid for at least 6 months after your return date.

  • A national or European driving license.
How old do I have to be to drive in Iceland?

For this trip, you must be at least 21 years old and have held a driver's license for 2 years to drive a car.

What exactly does the roadbook contain?

Our roadbook contains all the information you need for a successful road trip in Iceland.

In it you will find the complete itinerary, including all the hotspots and hidden gems you won't find in major travel guides. The recommended places have been carefully selected to give you plenty of choice, but you are free to plan your days as you wish.

Furthermore, our roadbook also contains a variety of nice addresses where you can grab something to eat or drink.

And what does the food pack consist of?

The foodpack includes freeze-dried meals, which just require some hot water and ingredients to cook yourself.

We have a regular and vegetarian version which both include 3 meals per person per day for the entire duration of your road trip.

Please note that the foodpack is not suitable for people with allergies or those following a strict diet, as it may contain traces of peanuts, gluten and other allergens.

What are the additional costs?
  • Icelandic tourist tax of €17.5 (€2.5 per night).

  • Fuel: approximately €400 per car for the entire trip 
  • For drinks and food (more info in the drinks and food section).
  • Entry to some places of interest.

  • The parking tickets.



Can I customize the trip to my liking?

We offer a fully organised road trip, so it is not possible to adjust the duration and itinerary. You are of course free to extend your trip at your own initiative by, for example, spending a couple of more days in Iceland afterwards or continuing your trip in another country.

With how many people can I make this trip?

Iceland Nomads is tailored to groups of 2 or 3 people.

If you are 3, we provide an extra ground tent and camping equipment (mattress, sleeping bag, and pillow) as the rooftop tent can only accommodate 2 people.

Do you want to participate with more than 3 people? That's possible, but you will have to organise into smaller groups. Each group has to register separately and will be allocated its own car. Do not hesitate to contact us in advance so we can check whether there are still enough available spots.

What is the payment procedure?

Within 10 days after your registration, you will have to pay a 35% down payment to confirm your road trip. After that, you have up to 45 days before departure to change your options and pay the balance. If you make changes, the deposit will be recalculated automatically.

Shortly before departure, you will also have to pay a deposit. The amount of the deposit depends on the car insurance you have chosen (more info in the car insurance section).

There are various payment options. Did your payment fail? In that case, you may have entered the wrong reference number or exceeded your account limit.

Can I still cancel my trip?

It is always possible to cancel your road trip. You can find the conditions cancellation conditions here. You can also rely on the Superflex cancellation conditions until 1/03/2025. More info under the FAQ ‘What are the Superflex cancellation conditions?

What are the Superflex cancellation conditions?

These conditions are available to anyone who books early. They allow you to move your road trip to another period within the same season (subject to availability) or cancel free of charge before 1/03/2025.

Is there on-site support?

Upon your arrival in Iceland, you will be warmly welcomed by our on-site rangers. They will greet you and give you a brief explanation before you embark on your trip.

During your road trip, you will be able to consult useful information in our app. Shortly before departure, you will also gain access to a Whatsapp group with all participants who are leaving on the same date as you are. You can use that group to communicate with one another, but in case of an emergency you will always be able to reach a team member.

Would you like to do your part for the planet?

Thanks to our partnership with Greentripper, you can rebalance the CO2 emissions of your trip. Your contribution goes to the certified Wildlife Cambodia project that protects all kinds of forests and the wildlife living there. On top of that, Travelbase also adds to every contribution.
