Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here you can find some frequently asked questions. If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact us via email.

What documents do I need to travel to South Africa?
  • An international passport that is still valid for at least 6 months after your trip.
  • (international) driver's license that has been valid for 3 years.

Our rental partner does not require an international driver's license; a national driver's license B/EB is sufficient. An international driver's license in English is also valid when combined with a national license.

How old do I need to be to drive in South Africa?

For this trip, you must be at least 23 years old and have held a driver’s license for 3 years to be allowed to drive a car. Please note: there will be additional costs of 79 euros per person if you are 23 or 24 years old to be able to drive the car.

Are you 25 years or older and have you had your driver's license for 3 years? Then there are no extra costs involved.

What's in the roadbook?

Our roadbook contains all the information you need for a successful road trip in South Africa.

In it you will find the complete itinerary, including all the hotspots and hidden gems you won't find in major travel guides. The recommended places have been carefully selected to give you plenty of choice, but you are free to plan your days as you wish.

Furthermore, our roadbook also contains a variety of nice addresses where you can grab something to eat or drink.

What are the additional costs?
  • Fuel: ± €300 per car for the entire road trip.
  • Toll roads: approximately €10 for the entire road trip.
  • Bucket list activities, available to book upon registration.
  • Food and drinks.
  • Local SIM card (approximately €20).
Is the car manual or automatic?

All Suzuki Jimny's are automatic.

Can I customize the trip to my liking?

We offer a fully organized road trip, so it is not possible to adjust the duration and itinerary. You are of course free to extend your trip at your own initiative by, for example, spending a couple of more days in Cape Town afterwards or continuing your trip in another country.

How many people can join us on this trip?

The Suzuki Jimny 4x4s are suitable for up to 2 people.

If you want to participate with more than 2 people, please contact us in advance so we can check if there are enough spots available.

How does the payment process work?

Within 10 days of your booking, you will need to pay a 35% deposit to confirm your road trip. After that, you have up to 45 days before departure to change your options and pay the remaining amount. If you make any changes, the deposit will be automatically recalculated.

Additionally, you'll also need to pay a security deposit for the rental car shortly before departure.

There are various payment options. You can pay with iDEAL, credit card, and PayPal, among others. Did your payment fail? In that case, you may have entered the wrong reference number or exceeded your account limit.

Can I still cancel my trip?

It's always possible to cancel your road trip. You can find the terms and conditions here.

Is there support on site?

Upon your arrival in South Africa, you'll be warmly welcomed by our local partners. They will greet you and provide you with information before your tour begins.

During your road trip, you will be able to consult useful information in our app. Shortly before departure, you will also gain access to a Whatsapp group with all participants who are leaving on the same date as you are. You can use that group to communicate with one another, but in case of an emergency you will always be able to reach a team member.

Do I need vaccinations before my trip to South Africa?

There are no mandatory vaccinations for South Africa, unless you have stayed in a high-risk yellow fever country within seven days before entering South Africa or have been in transit (at an airport) for 12 hours. In that case, a yellow fever vaccination is required.

Regardless of the length of stay, the following vaccinations are recommended for South Africa:

  • Vaccination against DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, and polio)
  • Vaccination against hepatitis A (infectious jaundice). Hepatitis A is only important if you're traveling in primitive conditions.
  • If you haven't had measles or a vaccination against measles, a MMR vaccination is recommended for South Africa.

You can check this website for more information or contact your doctor or the GGD (in the Netherlands).

Would you like to do your part for nature?

Through our partnership with Greentripper, you can offset the CO2 emissions from your trip. Your contribution goes to the certified Wildlife Cambodia project, which protects various forests and the wildlife that inhabits them. Plus, Travelbase also contributes to every donation.
